About the substance

MT2 is another name for Melanotan II, a cyclic peptide related to alpha-MSH. It interacts with melanocortin receptors. These receptors participate in several biological processes, which is why an effect on pigmentation does not describe the full range of possible responses.

How it works

The pigmentation-related mechanism involves signalling to pigment-producing cells. Melanotan II is not the same substance as melatonin, despite the similar names, and it is not a sunscreen or a substitute for protection against ultraviolet exposure.

What studies have examined

A small phase I study by Dorr and colleagues included three men. Increased pigmentation was observed in two, while reported reactions included nausea, tiredness, yawning and spontaneous erections. The small study does not establish general safety.

How to interpret the findings

The useful distinction is between a measurable pigment response and a safe cosmetic result. The cited pilot cannot show long-term safety, rule out uncommon adverse effects or validate the composition of a separately supplied product. Darker pigmentation should not be interpreted as permission to increase sun or solarium exposure.
